SELF-GUIDED ART TOUR

Sandra Mendelsohn Rubin
Title: Southern California Coast Summer
Medium: Oil on Canvas. 1985
Location:

When Sandra Mendelson Rubin lived in Los Angeles, she bought a van that was about the size of a parcel post truck. Originally used as a small school bus, the seats were removed, except for one, and it was converted into a portable studio.

Because it had been a school bus, the sides were lined with windows that opened down, perfect for making observations. Rubin’s process was to drive to a particular location, park and make a small study version of the landscape before her. After, she would use the study done on-site as a reference for a larger painting.

Among Ruben’s faculty mentors were Sam Amato, Elliot Elgart, William Brice and James Doolin.
